How electrification can transform summer flying

Summer peak travel season exposes a fundamental inefficiency in aviation infrastructure. Monthly passenger numbers at European airports spike to 140 million in July and August, concentrating traffic in major hubs like London, Paris, and Frankfurt—causing delays, volatile pricing, and millions of lost passenger hours. In a new opinion piece published in The Engineer, Helix’s Chief Engineer Aerospace Derek Jordanou-Bailey proposes an overlooked solution: smaller, hybrid-electric aircraft operating from regional airports.

The math is compelling but counterintuitive. Shifting traffic to regional airports requires smaller aircraft for short-haul routes, but short-haul flights carry aviation’s worst emissions profile: 155g CO2 per passenger kilometer versus the 88g industry average—a 75% penalty. Pure electrification fails due to battery energy density limitations, but series hybrid aircraft provide the breakthrough. By combining electric motors with onboard generators that recharge batteries during cruise, these aircraft can operate 270-nautical-mile routes while requiring 90% less fuel than conventional counterparts.

The cascading benefits transform the entire system. Airlines gain improved aircraft utilization, fewer delays, and lower operational costs. Passengers experience shorter travel times and reduced disruption. Environmental impact plummets as very short-haul flights become aviation’s cleanest category. Regional airports become the logical operating model rather than congested centralised hubs—solving capacity constraints while making air travel simultaneously more sustainable and convenient.
